When the earliest settlers came to Canada, they set forth to transform the wilderness into a productive farms. The first task was to fell the huge trees and make a small clearing for the building of a home.

The pioneers used the materials at hand, white pine, oak & elm. A large fireplace was built of field stone and the wooden shingles were split from logs.

This model represents a typical early homestead in Upper Canada (now Ontario).
