Early settlers thought education was important, though many children could
only attend school in winter when they were not needed to work on the farm. As
settlements were planned, land was set aside at crossroads for churches and
schools. The schoolhouse was usually the first building constructed in the
pioneer community. The smallest settlements were served by itinerant teachers
who would travel from village to village, teaching at each for a few months.
